< Back to Previous Page Ecology Responds to Diesel Spill into Hylebos Creek The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is responding to a diesel spill that happened early today (Saturday, March 1) along Interstate 5 in Pierce County. At about 3 a.m., a semi-truck operated by Gresham Transfer Inc. was involved in an accident on southbound I-5 near Fife. About 75 gallons of diesel fuel from the semi-truck spilled into Hylebos Creek, an environmentally sensitive waterway. Ecology crews, the Washington State Patrol, the City of Tacoma's Environmental Services division, and the Washington Department of Transportation responded to the scene. Gresham Transfer has hired a contractor to assist in the cleanup. On-scene work is expected to be completed by the end of today, said Jim Sachet, an Ecology spills response leader. Possible damage to the Hylebos Creek ecosystem is unknown at this time and will be assessed. Several state, local and tribal agencies are working on environmental restoration projects in the Hylebos watershed. The accident caused a driving hazard at the scene, leading to at least one other secondary accident. Drivers are advised to slow down and be alert while traveling past the accident scene. The semi-truck driver was not injured. He was cited for negligent driving, according to a spokesman for Gresham Transfer, an Oregon-based hauling company. The truck was dispatched from the company’s site in Kent.
