The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) compiled a statistical study by state of fatal and non-fatal crashes involving trucks and busses in the United States. The study was conducted with information gathered by the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). FARS concluded that in Louisiana during 2006 there were 97 large trucks and 6 buses involved in fatal collisions. They also concluded that there were 104 fatalities in those collisions with large trucks and 8 fatalities from the collisions with busses.
The MCMIS concluded that in Louisiana during 2006 there were:
- 2,086 large big rig trucks and 34 buses involved in non-fatal collisions
- 1,183 large big rig trucks and 15 buses involved in tow-away collisions
- 903 big rig trucks and 19 buses involved in collisions that resulted in injury
- 14 big rig trucks were involved in hazmat (Hazardous Materials) placard collisions
- 1,351 injuries resulted from collisions with big rig trucks and 52 injuries resulted from collisions with buses
The FMCSA also concluded that there were no adverse weather conditions in 89.7 percent of the 2,183 crashes that involved big rig trucks in Louisiana in 2006.
Accidents with big rig trucks can result from unfortunate natural conditions but they can also occur when the driver is fatigued, dangerous road conditions, or from mechanical errors. They can also be brought on by poor judgment calls on the part of the driver such as alcohol consumption, miscalculations, or reckless driving. They may even be caused by the poor maintenance of the truck by mechanic or the trucking company.
